The Los Angeles Angels pay a visit to Oakland to start the 2019 regular season. For the host Athletics, the regular season has already started, as they dropped both games of the Japan Series to the Mariners. Obviously, Bob Melvin’s club would love to avoid its first 0-3 start since 1996.

Odds: Angels +109 / A’s -119

Storylines

Angels: Opening Day 2019 for the Halos occasions Brad Ausmus’ debut as manager and Mike Trout’s first game since inking a $430 million contract extension. As for Trout, he enters the 2019 season with 120 career home runs at home and 120 career home runs on the road.

Trevor Cahill draws the start for the Angels opposite the team he played for last season. He’s in L.A. on a one-year, $9 million contract for 2019. Looking forward, the Angels will be looking to notch their first winning season since 2015 and make it back to the playoffs for the first time since 2014.

Athletics: In addition to that 0-2 start noted above, the A’s will be without first baseman Matt Olson (broken hamate bone) until probably late May. Suffice it to say, that’s a notable loss. On the mound will be righty Mike Fiers, who excelled last season after Oakland acquired him from the Tigers in August of last year. They re-upped with Fiers this past offseason.

Prediction

We’ll go with Fiers, Chapman, and the A’s at home.

Pick: Oakland -119

Odds: Cardinals -120 / Brewers +102

Cardinals: St. Louis acquired six-time All-Star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt from Arizona in December and finalized a five-year, $130 million extension before the start of the 2019 regular season. The Cards bring Goldschmidt to St. Louis in the hopes that he will lead them to the top of the National League Central and help the team make the postseason for the first time in four years. Goldschmidt will join a lineup that includes Marcell Ozuna, Dexter Fowler, Yadier Molina, Matt Carpenter and Paul DeJong. They’ve got the ability to score plenty of runs, and if the Cards see strong seasons from Dexter Fowler and Marcell Ozuna, they’ll be dangerous in 2019.

Miles Mikolas, 30, will start Opening Day and he was 18-4 with a 2.83 ERA and 146 strikeouts last season. The Cards will need the rest of their arms healthy — especially the young guys like Jack Flaherty and Carlos Martinez — if they want to make another run in the NL Central. St. Louis also brought on Andrew Miller to further bolster their bullpen, meaning 22-year-old Jordan Hicks will likely be the team’s closer in 2019.

Brewers: The defending National League Central champion Milwaukee Brewers are entering 2019 hoping to build on their impressive 2018 campaign. Led by the reigning NL MVP Christian Yelich, Milwaukee finished the year with an overall record of 95-67, defeated the Chicago Cubs in a game 163 for the division crown and pushed the Los Angeles Dodgers to a Game 7 in the NL Championship Series.

After making a few small tweaks to the team this winter, the Brewers look like they’re set for another deep playoff run. The team signed the top free agent catcher on the market in Yasmani Grandal, to a one-year deal worth $18.25 million. They also re-signed third baseman Mike Moustakas to a one-year contract, allowing Travis Shaw to return to second base. The Brewers don’t have a top of the line starting pitcher in their rotation, but manager Craig Counsell will have plenty of options because they have a good amount of depth in their pitching staff. Milwaukee will hope to see strong performances from starters Freddy Peralta, Brandon Woodruffand Corbin Burnes in 2019.

Prediction

Both these teams pack a powerful punch with their lineups, but I think the Cardinals behind Miles Mikolas, will have the edge over the Brewers in this game.

Pick: Cardinals -120

Picks: Check SportsLine’s MLB pick sheet for all your daily odds.

Odds: Rockies -150 / Marlins +134

Rockies: For the first time in franchise history, the Rockies made the postseason in back-to-back seasons in 2017 and 2018. They’re looking to make it three straight postseason trips in 2019 after locking up franchise player Nolan Arenado to a mammoth eight-year, $260 million contract extension. Stalwarts Carlos Gonzalez, DJ LeMahieu, and Adam Ottavino were allowed to leave as free agents while Daniel Murphy was brought in to add some left-handed punch to the lineup. The Rockies have the most talented rotation in franchise history right now, led by Opening Day starter Kyle Freeland and strikeout machine German Marquez.

Marlins: Year two of the Derek Jeter/Bruce Sherman era begins a few weeks after J.T. Realmuto was traded to the NL East rival Phillies for a three-player package. The new ownership group has stripped down payroll — Wei-Yin Chen, Martin Prado, and Starlin Castro are the only players on the roster making more than $3.2 million in 2019 — but at least they’re going all-in on young starting pitching, so that’s fun. Still, expect another long, losing season in Miami. It’ll be a few years until this ship gets turned around. The good news? Their new caps are 🔥.

Prediction

I’m a big Freeland fan and, let’s face it, the Marlins are really lacking offensive thump. Freeland dominates, Arenado and Murphy go deep, game over.

Pick: Rockies -150

Here’s how you can watch and what you should be aware of heading into the new year.

Picks: Check SportsLine’s MLB pick sheet for all your daily odds.

Odds: Astros -136 / Rays +117

Astros: It’s pretty simple: they want to win their second World Series in the last three years. They’ll have a real chance. Justin Verlander is on the bump, and he’s been one of the best pitchers in baseball since coming over to Houston late in 2017. The Astros recently signed him to a two-year extension that will keep him around through the 2021 season. This will mark the Houston debut for Michael Brantley, the club’s biggest free-agent addition.

Rays: They are hopeful to make the postseason for the first time since Andrew Friedman and Joe Maddon left. Blake Snell, last year’s Cy Young Award winner, is a big reason why. He’s coming off a tremendous season and figures to have a legitimate opportunity at winning another.

Prediction

The Astros are the better team on paper. We’ll give them the nod as a result.

Pick: Astros -136

The Tigers are starting their season by heading to Toronto to go up against the Blue Jays. Detroit’s AL Central has struggled to pull itself together in recent years and this season may not be much different.

Toronto, meanwhile, is playing in the stacked AL East. They’re chasing the Red Soxand the Yankees, but at least the Jays have Marcus Stroman on the mound going in this game. Toronto finished fourth in the East last year, so the key on Thursday is simple: Get things off on the right foot.

Here’s how to watch the opening day battle between the Tigers and Blue Jays.

  • Odds: Blue Jays -147 / Tigers +137

Blue Jays: For the Blue Jays, this season hinges upon what rookie Vladimir GuerreroJr. does. He is currently injured with an oblique strain, so everyone is wondering he’ll actually get into an MLB game. The backburner storyline for the Blue Jays is going to be Stroman’s form on the mound. He has battled shoulder inflammation this offseason, so he’ll try to live up to his ace status for the Jays. Last season was a step back for  Stroman after a solid 2017, so consistency will be something to keep an eye on for the Blue Jays’ hurler.

Tigers: It’s all about the rebuild in Detroit. This is one of baseball’s worst teams on paper, so they’ll need to keep an eye on players such as Nick Castellanos and Jeimer Candelario to monitor their trade value. Miguel Cabrera’s return is also worth following. After rupturing his bicep last year, Cabrera seems to be happy in Detroit again. While his MVP days are behind him, Cabrera could make for a solid season storyline if he’s able to make a comeback at age 36.

Prediction

This game is kind of a toss-up, but if Stroman is at his best he can out-pitch Jordan Zimmermann. We’ll take the Jays in this one.

Pick: Blue Jays -147

Grab your peanuts and Cracker Jacks because it’s root, root, root for the home team as the 2019 MLB season kicks off today with Opening Day.

For the second straight year, all 30 teams in the league will be playing on Opening Day and the action starts with the New York Mets taking on the Washington Nationals and the Baltimore Orioles going up against the New York Yankees with both games set to begin at 1:05pm ET (10:05 am PT, 5:00pm GMT).

In total, 15 games will be played, with perhaps the most intrigue being in Philadelphia where you can get a Braves vs Phillies live stream to see how the $330 million dollar man Bryce Harper starts out.

Last season, the Boston Red Sox faced off against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 114th edition of the World Series. Stream MLB during blackout games and outside the US

If there is no official broadcast option in your country or a game is not playing locally on MLB.TV due to an MLB blackout, you’ll need to use a VPN to dial in to a location in the US that does have coverage. Familiar faces in new places
We’ll get a chance to watch most of this offseason’s top free agents play for their new teams on Opening Day. Bryce Harper and Manny Machado — both broke contract records when they signed with their new teams. Harper joined the Phillies for 13-years, $330 million, while Machado agreed to a 10-year, $300 million with the Padres. Fans will also get the first official look at A.J. Pollock (Dodgers), Josh Donaldson (Braves), Yasmani Grandal (Brewers), Nelson Cruz (Twins), and Andrew McCutchen (Phillies) suited up with their new teams.

New-look NL East
The National League East became a division with four legitimate contenders after this offseason’s upgrades. While this was a quiet winter for most teams, the NL East stood out for their new additions. The Phillies had a “stupid” amount of money to spend this offseason so they went out and grabbed superstar slugger Bryce Harper and added four more All-Stars in Andrew McCutchen, David Robertson, J.T. Realmuto and Jean Segura. The Nationals lost Harper, but managed to stay relevant for this season with the addition of starting pitcher Patrick Corbin, catchers Yan Gomes and Kurt Suzuki, second baseman Brian Dozier and first baseman Matt Adams. The Braves tacked on a solid set of veterans (Josh Donaldson, Nick Markakis, Brian McCann) to pair with their talented, young core.

Even the Mets made moves this winter, hoping that the additions of Robinson Cano, Keon Broxton, Jed Lowrie, and Wilson Ramos will add more offensive power to their lineup. The Miami Marlins’ rebuild still has a long way to go before they can contend, but this division race is going to be intriguing with four potential playoff teams. Opening Day action will feature the Mets facing the Nationals and the Braves squaring off with the Phillies.

Watch Chicago White Sox vs Kansas City Royals Live

Picks: Check SportsLine’s MLB pick sheet for all your daily odds.
Odds: Royals -114 / White Sox -103
Storylines
White Sox: Chicago is coming off a disappointing winter in which they failed to land either Manny Machado or Bryce Harper. On the bright side, the White Sox will have Eloy Jimenez in the lineup and he could give them their sought-after middle-of-the-order bat. Carlos Rodon is hoping this is the season he looks like more than a mid-rotation starter.

Royals: Well, the Royals are going to be fast, if not good. Kansas City employs Billy Hamilton, Whit Merrifield, Terrance Gore, and Adalberto Mondesi — each of whom is a threat to run whenever they reach base. That should be fun. Otherwise, the best-case scenario for the Royals is playing spoiler and developing their young talent.

Prediction
Give us the White Sox. Both teams are likely to bad, but the Royals are probably a little worse.

Pick: White Sox -103
