It’s the beginning of the end for San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy and the beginning of what the San Diego Padres and their long-suffering fans hope is a return to relevance behind All-Star slugger Manny Machado and hotshot rookie shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr.

Bochy begins his 25th and final season as a manager — his first 12 were with the Padres — when Madison Bumgarner and the Giants face Eric Lauer and the Padres in a matchup of left-handers Thursday at sold-out Petco Park.

It’s easily the most-anticipated opening day in San Diego since the downtown ballpark opened in 2004 because of the signing of Machado to a $300 million, 10-year contract and the addition of the 20-year-old Tatis Jr., the No. 2 overall prospect in baseball, to the roster.

It’ll be special for Bochy as well. He managed the Padres from 1995 until being pushed out after the Padres’ playoff loss to St. Louis in 2006. While the Padres haven’t been back to the postseason since then, Bochy was snapped up by the Giants and managed them to three World Series titles in five seasons starting in 2010.

“I have great memories there,” said Bochy, who announced during spring training that he’ll retire after this season. “It’s ironic that that’s where I’m starting this year. I hadn’t really thought about it . but I’m sure I’ll do some reflecting there, but more importantly, we’ll focus on trying to win some ballgames. I’ve made that drive to the ballpark quite a few times, so I look forward to getting the season going. I’ll probably have some moments there and think about some great times there, and also some battles we’ve had with them.”

Bochy played for the Padres when they made it to the World Series in 1984, losing in five games to Detroit, and was their manager in the World Series in 1998, when they were swept by the New York Yankees. That 1998 season was the impetus that helped get Petco Park built.

The Padres hope to return to the World Series sooner rather than later. They showed they are serious about moving from rebuilding to contending by signing Machado early in spring training and then adding Tatis Jr., the prized prospect in what’s generally considered baseball’s top farm system, to the big league roster.

What did the Padres learn about Machado in his first month with the team?

“Good person. Good teammate,” said manager Andy Green, who’s starting his fourth season with the Padres. “Fun to be around. Easy to talk to for all his teammates, staff, everybody. Very approachable. A good person. He’s a good baseball player too, but I already knew that.”

Green spoke glowingly about Tatis Jr. even before he was added to the opening day roster.

“He’s young obviously. He’s a special talent. Incredibly athletic,” Green said. “You watch him run the bases and you see real quickly there is real power there. Comes out in bursts at time where you’re blown away by it and there are times it’s just hustle beating other teams. I think that’s been really positive. His improvement on the defensive side is the best thing for me. From where he was last year in spring training to where he is this year, if he takes one more leap like that he has a chance to be one of the absolute best in the game at that position.”

Tatis’ father, who played in the major leagues, was ecstatic when his son called him with the news of his promotion.

“It’s awesome for him,” the senior Tatis said from San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic, where he was making arrangements for the rest of the family to travel to San Diego for Thursday’s game. “It’s going to be great because playing right next to Manny is going to be a big help for him. I believe it’s going to be a great combination, third and short. I don’t think many balls are going to go through third base and shortstop because of their range. The left side of the infield is going to be amazing.”

Bumgarner (6-7, 3.26 ERA in 2018) is coming off a second straight injury-shortened season. Lauer was 6-7 with a 4.34 ERA in his first big league season.

Odds: Indians -120 / Twins +104
Storylines
Indians: They’ve coasted to three straight AL Central titles, including 2018’s 13-game advantage over the Twins, but they also coasted through an offseason that saw them lose big-name free agents like Cody Allen and Michael Brantley. Two of their best hitters in a lineup not particularly full of them — Francisco Lindor and Jose Ramirez — are also banged up. Still, they’ve got Corey Kluber fronting a star-studded rotation, and in the Central, that might be enough to get them another crown.

Twins: It’s a time of new beginnings all around, as the Twins enter the season without Joe Mauer for the first time in 15 years. Under new manager Rocco Baldelli, Minnesota should have more pop with C.J. Cron and Nelson Cruz in the fold, and that offensive boost alone should help them improve within the division. But it remains to be seen whether they’re committed to spending for upgrades in-season — or how they’ll fare outside the Central. They’re borderline playoff material.

Prediction
Twins fans should be excited for the new-look lineup to open the year at home, and Cleveland isn’t nearly as scary as it looked in 2018. But Kluber is still Kluber, which means he’ll be too much for Minny to handle. Carlos Santana launches one into the seats, and the Indians take Game One.

Pick: Indians -120

Odds: Rockies -150 / Marlins +134
Storylines
Rockies: For the first time in franchise history, the Rockies made the postseason in back-to-back seasons in 2017 and 2018. They’re looking to make it three straight postseason trips in 2019 after locking up franchise player Nolan Arenado to a mammoth eight-year, $260 million contract extension. Stalwarts Carlos Gonzalez, DJ LeMahieu, and Adam Ottavino were allowed to leave as free agents while Daniel Murphy was brought in to add some left-handed punch to the lineup. The Rockies have the most talented rotation in franchise history right now, led by Opening Day starter Kyle Freeland and strikeout machine German Marquez.

🔥

Marlins: Year two of the Derek Jeter/Bruce Sherman era begins a few weeks after J.T. Realmuto was traded to the NL East rival Phillies for a three-player package. The new ownership group has stripped down payroll — Wei-Yin Chen, Martin Prado, and Starlin Castro are the only players on the roster making more than $3.2 million in 2019 — but at least they’re going all-in on young starting pitching, so that’s fun. Still, expect another long, losing season in Miami. It’ll be a few years until this ship gets turned around. The good news? Their new caps are .

Prediction
I’m a big Freeland fan and, let’s face it, the Marlins are really lacking offensive thump. Freeland dominates, Arenado and Murphy go deep, game over.

Pick: Rockies -150

MLB | Pittsburgh Pirates at Cincinnati Reds
David Kohl-USA TODAY Sports
The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Cincinnati Reds meet in MLB opening day action from the Great American Ballpark on Thursday.

The Pittsburgh Pirates come into the 2019 season looking to bounce back after an 82-79 regular season that saw the Buccos finish 4th in the NL Central, missing the playoffs for the 3rd straight season. The Pirates made some moves in the offseason, trading for former Indians infielder Erik Gonzalez, who is expected to replace Josh Harrison after Harrison left in free agency. Jordan Lyles was brought in as a potential 5th starter for Pittsburgh after Ivan Nova was traded to the White Sox in the offseason. The rotation seems to be pretty much set otherwise, with Jameson Taillon leading the charge, followed up by Trevor Williams, Joe Musgrove and Chris Archer. Only time will tell if Pittsburgh can get back to the postseason and win their first playoff series since 1979. Jameson Taillon will start game one and was 14-10 with a 3.20 ERA and 179 strikeouts last season. In his career, Taillon is 4-4 with a 4.30 ERA and 63 strikeouts against Cincinnati.

Sports Chat Place Experts
The Cincinnati Reds will look to rebound after yet another disappointing season, finishing below the 70-win mark for the 4th straight season, ending 2018 with an overall mark of 67-95, 15.5 games behind 4th place in the NL Central. The Reds made a huge splash in the offseason, sending prospects and Homer Bailey to the Dodgers for a package including Alex Wood, Yasiel Puig and Matt Kemp to help strengthen the squad. Wood will be looking for a bounce back year after going 9-7 with a 3.68 ERA and 135 strikeouts while Kemp hit .290 with 21 homers and 85 RBIs and Puig belted 23 homers and 63 RBIs while batting .267. The Reds also return Joey Votto, Eugenio Suarez, Scooter Gennett and Scott Schebler to form a solid lineup bookmarked by Jose Peraza and Tucker Barnhart. The rotation also looks improved with Luis Castillo leading the charge while Anthony DeSclafani, Sonny Gray and Tanner Roark fill out the rest of the rotation. It will be interesting to see if all of these big moves can help Cincy return to the postseason or if it will be another disappointing year for the Reds’ faithful. Luis Castillo will start game one and was 10-12 with a 4.30 ERA and 165 strikeouts last season. In his career, Castillo is 1-3 with a 4.00 ERA and 24 strikeouts against Pittsburgh.

Sports Chat Place Experts
Pittsburgh is 7-1 in Taillon’s last 8 starts and 8-2 in their last 10 games against a right-handed starter while the under is 13-6 in their last 19 road games. Cincinnati is 4-1 in Castillo’s last 5 division starts and 9-3 in Castillo’s last 12 home starts while the under is 14-2-1 in their last 17 games overall. Pittsburgh is 8-1 in the last 9 meetings between these two teams and 5-1 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams in Cincinnati.

Pittsburgh and the plus money is tempting considering that arguably their best pitcher in on the mound in Taillon and the Pirates have had a lot of success in this matchup. However, Castillo has been solid in his own right for the Reds, and I’m excited to see all of the new acquisitions for the Reds get involved. I think Cincinnati bucks the trends and starts the year on a high note with a win here.

Los Angeles Angels vs Oakland Athletics Live Stream MLB

MLB Opening Day 2019: Schedule, starting pitchers, and TV/live stream info.

All 30 teams are in action on Thursday in a jam-packed opening day throughout Major League Baseball.

Los Angeles Angels vs Oakland Athletics Live

Though it is opening day, there have already been two regular season games played, after the Seattle Mariners beat the Oakland Athletics in two games at Tokyo Dome in Japan on March 20-21. Both teams are back home a week later to start the domestic portion of their respective schedules.

Cy Young Award winners galore take the mound on opening day, with reigning National League winner Jacob deGrom and the New York Mets on the road to face the Washington Nationals and Max Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young Award winner who won in the NL in both 2016 and 2017. Last year’s American League Cy Young winner Blake Snell is at home where the Tampa Bay Rays will face the Houston Astros and Justin Verlander, the 2011 Cy Young winner and a three-time Cy runner up, including in 2018.

Corey Kluber, the AL Cy Young Award winner in both 2014 and 2017, starts for the Cleveland Indians on the road to face the Minnesota Twins in an AL Central battle.

Three-time Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw was originally scheduled to start for the Los Angeles Dodgers but left shoulder inflammation has pushed back his start to the season. Instead, Hyun-jin Ryu starts for the Dodgers against former teammate and 2012 AL Cy Young winner Zack Greinke and the Arizona Diamonbacks. This broke Kershaw’s streak of nine consecutive opening day starts

Felix Hernandez, the 2010 AL Cy winner, had a streak of 10 straight opening day starts snapped when Marco Gonzales took the mound for Seattle last week against the A’s in Japan.

ESPN will nationally televise three games on Thursday, beginning with the New York Yankees hosting the Baltimore Orioles. The other two ESPN games feature last year’s World Series participants, with the Dodgers hosting the Diamondbacks in Los Angeles, followed by the champion Boston Red Sox on the road in Seattle. All three games can be streamed online through Watch ESPN.

Bryce Harper and Manny Machado debut with their new teams, with the Philadelphia Phillies hosting the Atlanta Braves, and the San Diego Padres hosting the San Francisco Giants.

In that latter game, Bruce Bochy starts his 25th and final season as manager with San Francisco on the road in San Diego, where played five years and managed in San Diego another 12 seasons. Bochy announced on Feb. 18 that he would retire after the 2019 season.

Odds: Cubs -133 / Rangers +123
Storylines
Cubs: Jon Lester goes for the Cubs, and he’ll be attempting to replicate the success he had in 2018. Lester thrived at keeping runs off the board despite declining peripherals. Sometimes that’s a recipe for regression, and Lester in his age-35 season needs to prove he’s an exception to that rule. The Cubs figure to be in a three-way struggle with the Brewers and Cardinals for the NL Central title this season. They’re coming off a 95-win season in 2018, but it was also one in which they failed to advance past the NL Wild Card Game.

Rangers: Texas is coming off its second 95-loss season in the last five years, and they’re not positioned to be much better in 2019. The post-Adrian Beltre era begins with lefty Mike Minor on the mound for the Rangers. All you need to know about the Ranger rotation is that Mike Minor is their Opening Day starter. This team figures to be in the running for the top overall draft pick in 2020.

Watch Houston Astros vs Tampa Bay Rays Live

Having come up one step short of a return trip to the World Series, the Houston Astros begin their bid for a third straight AL West title and 100-win season Thursday when they face the Tampa Bay Rays in a clash of Cy Young Award winners.

The Houston Astros and Tampa Bay Rays meet Thursday in MLB action at Tropicana Field.

The Houston Astros are a lot healthier than they finished last season, as it was painful to see Jose Altuve hobbling around and Carlos Correa struggling with a back injury. When healthy, the Astros are probably the best lineup in baseball, capable of putting up crooked numbers any given inning and the lineup got even better with the underrated addition of Michael Brantley. It’s getting harder and harder to find an easy out in this Astros batting order, which is why they’re either first or second when it comes to odds to win the World Series. The Houston Astros have won each of their last six opening days. Justin Verlander gets the ball, and he was 16-9 with a 2.52 ERA and 290 strikeouts last season. Verlander is 8-5 with a 3.53 ERA and 133 strikeouts in his career against the Rays.

Sports Chat Place Experts
The Tampa Bay Rays quietly won 90 games last season and enter this year as a dark horse contender not only in the AL East but also for the AL pennant. The Rays may not have the star power as the other top teams in baseball, but they were third last year in team batting average (.258) and sixth in team ERA (3.74), making them one of the more balanced teams you will find. The Rays also beefed up the lineup a little with the addition of Avisail Garcia and the starting rotation got better with the signing of Charlie Morton. The Rays are going to be one of those good teams that you will find at favorable prices all year long, so make sure to keep an eye on this club. The Tampa Bay Rays have split their last six opening days. Blake Snell gets the ball, and he was 21-5 with a 1.89 ERA and 221 strikeouts last season. Snell is 4-1 with a 3.10 ERA and 44 strikeouts in his career against the Astros.

Sports Chat Place Live
The Astros are 40-14 in their last 54 road games, 18-3 in Verlanders last 21 road starts and 7-1 in Verlanders last 8 starts. The Rays are 39-14 in their last 53 home games, 16-5 in Snells last 21 home starts and 22-7 in Snells last 29 starts. The Astros are 5-14 in the last 19 meetings in Tampa Bay and 3-7 in the last 10 meetings. The under is 12-3-2 in Snells last 17 starts overall. The under is 7-3 in Astros last 10 road games.

As I mentioned previously, the Tampa Bay Rays are going to be one of those good teams that you’ll be able to get at favorable prices all year long simply due to the lines not being drowned in public money. The Rays just aren’t a public, sexy team. However, getting the Houston Astros and Verlander at this cheap of a price is always a steal and I don’t care who is on the other side. Any time I can get the Astros and one of the top pitchers in the sport under -150, I’m all over it. For obvious reasons, of course.

The Tigers are starting their season by heading to Toronto to go up against the Blue Jays. Detroit’s AL Central has struggled to pull itself together in recent years and this season may not be much different.

Toronto, meanwhile, is playing in the stacked AL East. They’re chasing the Red Sox and the Yankees, but at least the Jays have Marcus Stroman on the mound going in this game. Toronto finished fourth in the East last year, so the key on Thursday is simple: Get things off on the right foot.

Here’s how to watch the opening day battle between the Tigers and Blue Jays.

Odds: Blue Jays -147 / Tigers +137
Storylines
Blue Jays: For the Blue Jays, this season hinges upon what rookie Vladimir Guerrero Jr. does. He is currently injured with an oblique strain, so everyone is wondering he’ll actually get into an MLB game. The backburner storyline for the Blue Jays is going to be Stroman’s form on the mound. He has battled shoulder inflammation this offseason, so he’ll try to live up to his ace status for the Jays. Last season was a step back for Stroman after a solid 2017, so consistency will be something to keep an eye on for the Blue Jays’ hurler.

Tigers: It’s all about the rebuild in Detroit. This is one of baseball’s worst teams on paper, so they’ll need to keep an eye on players such as Nick Castellanos and Jeimer Candelario to monitor their trade value. Miguel Cabrera’s return is also worth following. After rupturing his bicep last year, Cabrera seems to be happy in Detroit again. While his MVP days are behind him, Cabrera could make for a solid season storyline if he’s able to make a comeback at age 36.

Prediction
This game is kind of a toss-up, but if Stroman is at his best he can out-pitch Jordan Zimmermann. We’ll take the Jays in this one.

Pick: Blue Jays -147
